Saqqara Mastabas, American Monoxide, Upcoming Releases, HSBDC Concession....

Well, a lot has happened recently. And a lot is coming up. PIAPTK has always been a passion project and has never broken even (let alone turned a profit), but if you enjoy the weirdness that is what we do, we would really appreciate your support, now more than ever, by picking up some things. If an excellent record is released into a vacuum, does it make a sound? Or does it just sit on a cinder block shelf in a basement?

In return, for the next week, we are offering a discount code for 25% off any combined purchases over $100 (including lathe cuts, preorders, test pressings, and archives purchases). Enter code "PIAPTK" at check out and save some cash!

PS. We have 1997 of our 2000 "free" subscribers on Mailchimp, so we will be cleaning up the email list for next mailout. If you haven't bought anything in a while, and want to stay on the list, please go download the free MP3 sampler here. Or you can buy one of the releases below.

4. UPDATE: Homely Singles Blind Date Club: Shaped 7"

UPDATE: BELOW IS THE ORIGINAL PITCH, AND THE WAY I ALWAYS HOPED THIS WOULD GO DOWN. I loved the idea of allowing people the excitement and adventure of acquiring a cool, weird shaped record, from a band that they may or may not have heard of, totally randomly. However, the people have spoken with their purses and said "fuck that". So, you got me. I concede defeat and will now offer these amazing little oddities individually. You can choose the one you want. You bastards.

A new series that combines the unlikely elements of record club, speed dating, body love conference, upcycling, and shopping mall sticker vending machine. Limited to 50 copies per disc, all packaged in thick picture disc sleeves.

All purchases receive full 22 track digital download.

HOMELY SINGLES:
The Homely Singles Blind Date Club is a record club that seeks to utilize the leftover router drop plastic that happens when I cut circular discs. I buy the plastic in strips, but due to the sizes of the strips, there is usually a smaller than 7" section that is leftover. So, we utilitze that space the best we can, but when cut with our circle router, it produces some strange shapes. We have been stockpiling these "Homely" records and are now allowing these pieces of plastic to fulfill their destiny, which has long been denied them... we are making these "unique" discs beatiful on the inside by putting new tracks by some of our favorite bands.

The shapes pictured are only examples and your discs MAY NOT be in the same shape pictured.

BLIND DATE CLUB: (BOOOOHHISSS)
The Blind Date aspect of this is much like a sticker vending machine at the mall. You know what is available, but you DO NOT GET TO CHOOSE YOUR DISC. You put faith in the universe (and PIAPTK) that your audio date will be with a worthy companion. Discs will be rotated through in order. So, if you buy more than one, you will not receive any duplicates, and the only way to guarantee you get any particular disc is to buy one of each.

Artists Include:
1. Jack Lewis: Brother of Jeffrey, with David Herman Dune. Heavy Metal Kidz b/w This Land Is Your Land
2. Sandman the Rappin Cowboy (with Khaela Marcicich (The Blow)): People Are Sexy b/w Miss Rodeo Montana
3. Turner Cody: Kingdom II b/w Lola
4. Krab Legz (Dimitri Manos (Golden Boots/Dr Dog) and Ben Schneider (Otherly Love)):Line Cook b/w Hollandaise in the Sun
5: SpaceFace: Trust b/w Madness
6. Strong Martian (80% of Spaceface, side project): Running Back b/w Paint My Past
7. Graves & Kacey Johansing: Everywhere/Silver Wings
8. The Blank Tapes: The Shaft b/w Chasing the Sun
9. Fur Family: Airplanes and Cigarettes b/w Aztec Road
10. The Coke Dares (mems of Magnolia Electric Co and The Impossible Shapes): Fantasy Book b/w Nobody Knows Who You Are, Pillbottle.

National Crab Meet Day is March 9th! Claws Across America! Crab Legs vs. Krab Legz.

This is the Tail of Two Crab Legs.

There once was a band called Crab Legs in Fargo, ND. A bunch of punks, doing their thing. But several years into the career of the Fargo Crab Legs, a new Crab Legs came on the scene. A couple of weirdo whippersnappers from Tucson, AZ named King and Snow. The Fargo Crab Legs decided that the US wasn't big enough for two Crab Legs and sent a Cease and Desist order to the Tucson Crab Legs.

Both sides agreed that they didn't trust the corrupt American Legal System and Prison Industrial Complex. So, they decided that the only way to settle it was a West Side Story style RUMBLE. A date was set, and it was agreed that the rumble would take place halfway between them on the neutral turf of Selden, KS, and that the winner would take complete control of the Crab Legs moniker. High kicks were kicked, fingers were snapped, leather jackets (studded black for the Fargo Crab Legs, brown suede Members Only for the Tucson duo) littered the parking of the Selden Waffle House. After the dust settled, it was clear that the Fargo contingent had the Tucson boys outnumbered, and despite the fact that King pulled a switchblade comb (he claimed coiffure self-defense), they were roundly defeated.

Despite a decisive victory by the Fargo bros, the Tucson dudes refused to honor their agreement and threatened to crowdfund a smear campaign in the press to malign the punk integrity of the victors. They claimed to have evidence that various members had once owned Backstreet Boys pillowcases (non-ironically), and yearbook photos that would prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that a certain unnamed member had once "been into Phish".

Luckily, world renown record label owner, Michael Dixon of PIAPTK Recordings, happened to be sitting in the window of the Waffle House, watching the melee. And in an effort to keep Iowa Ave (strangely, 80% of streets in Selden, KS are named after other states) from running red with the blood of struggling musicians, he stepped in. Always a peacemaker (and opportunist), Dixon saw an intense artistic human interest story that he could take financial advantage of. He made a deal that will go down in history as one of the shrewdest music business moves that had ever been negotiated in Selden in late August of 2015. The Tucson Crab Legs would receive a cash payout to change their name to Krab Legz (the exact monetary payment has not been disclosed, but there are rumors that it was in the high double digits), and in return, and as a sign of friendship and hatchet burial, the Fargo Crab Legs would agree to release a split 7" with Krab Legz on the PIAPTK label for charity (though rumors have persisted that PIAPTK stood to benefit heavily from the release as a tax shelter). A new non-profit organization was founded for the occasion called Claws Across America, which was intended as the torchbearer to previous peace and love based initiatives such as "We Are The World", "Free Tibet", "Artists Against Apartheid", and "Mark Zuckerberg Invest A Billion Dollars in Kanye Ideas".

You can contribute to Claws Across America by purchasing this piece of history on clear, square, lathe cut 6" vinyl. All proceeds go to promoting peace between bands formerly or presently known as Crab Legs.

T-Town Sessions Gallery Pic Discs!

These 7"s were made for the one-year-anniversary of the amazing Tucson video series, T-Town Sessions. T-Town Sessions is a collaboration between four amazingly talented female producers/videographers, St. Cecilia Studios, and Cloud Microphones that puts a spotlight on the wide range of incredible artists in Tucson. Indie, blues, punk, and mariachi bands have all been featured.

We partnered with Photographer Abril Castillo to make transparency picture discs, modeled to look like photographic negatives, inside custom die cut covers that make them look like vintage slides.

There are 10 different images, 3 copies each. Only 30 copies were made, 10 sold to benefit T-Town Sessions at the One Year Anniversary Party, 10 for the band, and 10 for PIAPTK to sell to recoup the costs of production.

We are only selling SIX records, and you will get a random disc. To see all 10 images, click below!

Each one has been signed and numbered by Abril Castillo!

New IVL! COLD'diss'Play

If you remember, the IVL is our weirdo side label of established bands performing avant garde music under pseudonyms. Only 53 copies made, and there are a ton of rules to this strange little label, to read more about those rules go here. Some of these bands may be bands (or members of) that you know and love, but you won't know until they sell out and we announce it, and then it will be too late. This new record is no exception. We now have a new one by the hottest anonymous band that ever existed, COLD'diss'Play. Two smoking hot jams recorded on a tour bus and during soundchecks from an undisclosed sold-out theater somewhere on the planet Earth. The A-side is called Bungus Bay, paired with the aptly titled Bungus Bay Part Deux.

MORE Floating Action: Hold Your Fire 2xLP - Handmade versions. 5 left! Everything else is SOLD OUT!

WE sold out of all of our copies of the 2xLP in only a few days, but Seth Kaufman sent us his share of the hand drawn copies to sell for him, and we have only 5 copies left! Every other copy (including the regular version is completely sold out through us. You might still be able to get them at www.BabyGasMaskRecords.com. And while you are there, pick up some of their "West Foot Forward Series" 7"s. They are doing an amazing job chronicling the quiet mainstream musical subversion happening in Tucson right now!

Jeffrey Lewis Soild Gold, Floating Action 2xLP!

Jeffrey Lewis: "Did Not Pick The Tracks or Sequence of This Outtakes Record" LP - Soild Gold

Jeffrey Lewis was the poster boy for the Anti-Folk movement of the early 2000s, and is still going strong making smart, clever, outsider tinged pop songs.

We, at PIAPTK and Soild Gold, have been HUGE fans of Jeffrey since long before either label existed, so it's an ENORMOUS honor for us to curate an outtakes compilation LP for Soild Gold. After years of begging him to do a release with us, he finally said (and I'm paraphrasing) "Well, I've got about 50 songs that I don't really like that you can hear. I'm not a good judge of my own material, so you can give me some notes". He sent over three CDs worth of amazing tunes in demo form. I sent him a list of songs that I thought would go really well together on an LP. He said (again paraphrasing), "I certainly wouldn't have chosen those tunes or running order, but I kind of like that it was curated by you and not me. Can you be sure that somewhere on the album it says that this wasn't my idea?". So, in true Soild Gold fashioned we named the record "Jeffrey Lewis - Did Not Choose The Tracklisting or Sequence of This Record".

Limited Edition of 200 Lps and 100 Cassette Tapes sold.

LPs on Goldenrod Vinyl and Cassettes on Gold tapes.

35 Gold with Red, yellow, and/or white Splatter vinyl will be sent to random purchasers.

Includes a JL Pinup poster.

Floating Action: Hold Your Fire 2xLP

We are so excited to release the new, double LP from NC's Floating Action. Seth Kaufmann, besides being the sole player on most Floating Action records, is also the secret weapon/hired gun that adds the finishing touches and production to everyone from Pop superstars to Indie Rock stalwarts. The new 21 song double album includes guest vocal appearances from Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Angel Olsen, and Shannon Whitworth.

Check some of it out here: https://soundcloud.com/balladesports

Limited Edition of 300 copies, 50 of which are handmade by Seth himself using hand painting and silkscreening. (Photos not yet available). Handmade editions include a special bonus 7" Semi Flexi lathe cut with the unreleased song, My Blood is Bright Red. We only have 20 copies of this version available!

If you miss out on the handmade edition, you can add on the Semi-Flexi lathe cut for only $6 (available only during preorders, will never be repressed).

These come packaged in hand assembled, Taiwanese-Style Bootleg covers, on fancy label-less weirdo splatter vinyl configurations, hand made by Mike Dixon of PIAPTK. Every one is different, and they are all weird. Mike spent 5 days hunched over an industrial press in NJ making these records and hand-mixing the vinyl pellets. They are all a combination of Green, Silver, Blue, Yellow, and Clear.

This is a co-release between PIAPTK, Baby Gas Mask, and Soild Gold Extended Services Division.

Presto 6N Poster

Presto 6N record lathes are, in my opinion, the most beautiful piece of machinery ever made. I own 14 of them. I will buy more. I made a handful of these beautiful 22x30" poster reproductions of the 1950 Presto 6N one-sheet. Each one is numbered out of 26. We only have 5 left. $15 of every purchase will be donated to www.lathetrolls.com, which is a record cutting nerd online hangout, to support the maintenance of the site. These are hand silkscreened on very high quality art cardstock.

Floating Action: Research Handmade "Color Test" Pressings

When the pressing plant sent us the original black test pressings for RESEARCH, they also threw in about 20 "color test" pressings, that were just the press guys playing around with weird splatter designs. Almost all of them were unique... We weren't really sure what to do with them, as they fell outside of the Soild Gold model, but are really too cool to sit in the overflowing PIAPTK warehouse of misfit records, so Seth Kaufman offered to hand-draw covers for them. So, he has 10 copies, and we have ten copies, each of which has a hand-painted recreation of the original RESEARCH album art, with a hand drawn/written track listing on the back, and a "color test" pressing. Pictured are a few of the random designs.

Grandaddy, Mike Watt, Globelamp, Jeffrey Lewis, American Monoxide, Anthony Junior, Rarities sale, THE IVL DISCOS, etc!

We have so many new releases from amazing artists we've been trying to work with for years!  Check them all out below and buy them HERE.

Grandaddy - Arm of Roger: The Ham and it's Lily

Soild Gold is beyond thrilled to announce the first ever vinyl issue of Grandaddy's "lost" practical joke record, Arm of Roger: The Ham and It's Lily!  Like all Soild Gold Releases, it is limited to 200 LPs and 100 cassettes sold. 165 of those LPs are on transparent gold vinyl, and 35 copies (randomly inserted into orders) are on "mustard and ketchup" vinyl to mirror the back cover of the original CD release.

This was the “practical joke” album that Grandaddy sent to their label, V2, prior to sending them the masters to The Sophtware Slump. The label was not thrilled by their “new direction”, but you will be. Songs about robots, animals, behind the scenes band drama, and female genitalia.

DO YOU LIKE TEST PRESSINGS?
We have 3 test pressings to be given away in a raffle. To enter the raffle, use the "pay what you
want" option and enter a value (over $15) that includes change.  Grandaddy has chosen a number between .01 and .99, and the first three people to pay a value with that change amount, win the test pressing. For example, if they chose $.02 (hint: they didn't), and you paid $15.02, you win a test pressing. You have the same chance of winning whether you pay $15.02 or $250.02... However, if you
throw in a little extra, it goes to cover the cost of the beer that we drank while packing these records up.

Jeffrey Lewis: No. 2 Girl CD-Record (CD/Vinyl Hybrid)

Jeffrey Lewis has been one of my friends and favorite songwriters for as long as I’ve run PIAPTK. I’ve begged him since the first day I met him to release something through PIAPTK. Persistence finally paid off. One afternoon we were hanging out in NYC and I talked him into sending me two discs worth of incredible demos and outtakes, which he allowed me to curate into an upcoming Soild Gold LP release, and to use my favorite song, No. 2 Girl, for the CD-Record Series or CD/Vinyl Hybrid discs.

Mike Watt: Watt: On Bass Eulerian Circle 3-sided Record

I’ve already gushed about Mike Watt here before.  He is the “godfather” of punk rock. He was my first “rock star” encounter when I was 14, and was incredibly kind and generous with his time while my friends and I asked him stupid questions while geeking out about fIREHOSE and the Minutemen.  And he is still that guy. When I asked him to contribute to the Eulerian Circles series he went into his home studio and knocked out three short improvised bass jams for this three-sided, 4”x8” record. It’s a kooky little collectors item, but I feel like it is the boiled down essence of the Man in the Van with the Bass in his Hand.  Limited Edition of 100 copies.

Globelamp: Sha-La-Love b/w Birds Down My Back Lathe Cut 7" with unique hand drawn covers

We worked with Elizabeth Le Fey’s old band, Meowtain several years ago. After that she joined Foxygen for a while before leaving to pursue her own solo project, Globelamp. Really excited to work with her again for a new single with two hot new jams!

Each of these lathe cut 7” white squares comes in a unique, handmade cover hand drawn, painted, glittered, palm printed, and/or kissed by Lizzie herself with a silkscreened B-side.

TEST PRESSINGS AND RARITY SALE

With every release, we put back a handful of copies for our archives and for shipping and production problems, etc. And every once in a while, we have to dig deep to raise some extra cash for upcoming releases, so we dig out the extras.

We’ve added out-of-print releases from The Flaming Lips, Scott McMicken, Dr Dog, Ariel Pink, Wooden Wand, Golden Boots, Little Wings, R Stevie Moore, Benoit Pioulard, Bishop Allen, The Microphones, Paleo, This Frontier Needs Heores, Black Prairie, Lazer Zeppelin, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, What Made Milwaukee Famous, Eric Johnson (Fruit Bats), Joe Plummer (Shins, Modest Mouse, Cold War Kids, Built In Sun, Blackheart Procession), Grand Archives, Kristofferson Tribute, Southerly, etc.

THE IVL DISCOS SERIES

The IVL Discos is a new PIAPTK subsidiary inspired by the weird, avant garde, non-commercial side projects of so many bands that I know. Here are the details.  Some of these will have been made by bands that you know and love, and some will be bands that you WOULD have loved had you known them.  We have some pretty amazing artists contributing (some that we’ve been courting for years that finally came on board once we offered to let them fly their freak flags.

The Criteria:
1) All releases will be limited to 53 lathe cut 7” (max 6 min per side) copies. 17 artist copies, 33 copies sold through our website, and 3 copies that will be mailed to a randomly chosen thrift store in an American town that nobody has ever heard of. All releases will be sold through the website for $8.88 each.
2) Each release will be recorded by musicians in other bands.  Could be established bands, collaborations between friends, super groups, solo artists, whatever. Each release will be credited to a pseudonym (chosen by the band), and all performers will choose pseudonyms for themselves.  No information (other than the pseudonyms) about the band or performers will be released until after all the copies have been sold.
3) All music will be in the vein of avant garde, experimental, noise, etc. It is preferable that the music be so far outside the standard output of the artists involved that it is unrecognizable.
4) The label is responsible only for curation of the artist… the artists will be given FULL creative control to record/release ANYTHING they want.
5) The records will be on clear, square, 7” lathe cuts. They will be packaged in minimal, consistent, and relatively ugly covers.
6) All releases will be available for streaming through Soundcloud until they are sold out, and will then be taken down. No digital files will be offered.

Anthony Junior: A Magical Evening With Anthony Junior LP Repress

We sold out of the first pressing of this LP lathe cut almost instantly, so we tracked Anthony down (he’s living in Vancouver, WA for some reason), and got him to hand paint us 20 more covers.

In case you didn’t read about him last email, here is what you missed:

25 tracks of lo-fi outsider pop genius on one clear, lathe cut LP with hand-painted covers by Anthony himself.

Listen to it here:  https://soundcloud.com/anthonyjuniorpiaptk/sets/anthony-junior-a-magical-evening-with

If you’ve been following PIAPTK from the beginning, you might remember Anthony Junior. We released several things for him before he dropped off the face of the Earth in 2008.

For the people who've met him, Anthony is legendary. The legend hasn’t always been pretty, but it was ALWAYS interesting. One of these days I will write a book about my two years of living and playing music with Anthony. The Spanish band, Notes to Myself (who stayed at our house for one night), wrote a song about it called “Night at Anthonys”.

Like Daniel Johnston, Syd Barret, Brian Wilson, Biff Rose, and Ivor Cutler before him, Anthony has/had intense sparks of genius, unconventional musical ideas, prolific output and certain “challenges” in day to day functioning and interpersonal relationships. Over the last 7 years, I haven’t heard much from Anthony. He went through a pretty hard time during our tenure as roommates in Olympia in 2007/2008 and we parted on somewhat unpleasant terms. Over the ensuing years he would pop up and make contact during his good periods, disappear during what I can only assume were his harder periods. He recently got back in touch, is living in Vancouver, recording new songs, and appears to be doing pretty well. In honor of that, we dug out these old covers that were intended for the release of “Magical Evening With” in 2008.

American Monoxide Tape Lathe repress & Individual Tape

These 2x Lathe cut/Cassette sandwiches sold out immediately after the last email, so we’ve made another 40 copies (second pressing on blue cassettes instead of red).  We’ve also made another run of the “standard” cassette version, which were originally only sold locally in Tucson.

Here is the Deal:

A split EP from Tucson weirdos American Monoxide (Dimitri Manos of Dr Dog/Golden Boots) and Wight Lhite. This cassette was released in two formats… The standard version on Paisley Shirt Records out of SF, and the “Deluxe Lathe Cut Sandwich” Version on PIAPTK.  The first pressing (red cassettes) are limited to 30 copies of each version. Subsequent editions (if any) will be on different colored cassettes.

Here’s How it Works:
Each Deluxe Version includes: One Cassette, Two Venn Diagram off-set hole lathe cuts, two bolts, two wingnuts, and four rubber mounting shock absorber grommets, and one Sathers Candy style package. Each lathe cut includes two tracks that are designed to be played in conjunction with the cassette, but can be played separately.
