Money Mark, Spaceface, Golden Boots w/ Lonna Kelley, New T-Shirts, Lathe Cut Camp!

Well, first of all, I would like to apologize for the delay on the Sugar Candy Mountain preorders. Due to the next-level "vinyl resurgence" that's happening now causing huge demand for major label releases with runs of 100,000+, paired with all the Record Store Day demand, all the little guys like PIAPTK, are getting pushed back and pushed out. BUT, the LPs have arrived and have all shipped, so if you haven't received it yet, it should be there any day now.

New Site Coming: It is not lost on me that my current website sucks really badly. It is glitchy and lame and expensive. So, I am currently working on migrating to a new website platform. But, that takes time. And once I migrate, a lot of the releases that I am almost out of will either not be available, or will be relegated to the the Archives/OOP sections, when/if I put them on the new site. So, please help me out by visiting the "Last Chance" Section of the site and help me sell out of the last few copies of these releases. Because of this, a LOT of photos and release info from out of print stuff will disappear from PIAPTK.com. Which is a drag, but that's the way love goes, I guess.

Discography - I finally put together a better "discography" with some info from each of the 325+ releases we've put out in the last 15 years. You can view it here.

And if you are a Wikipedia editor and would be willing to help me out by adding it to the PIAPTK wikipedia, I would be forever grateful.

OK, On to New Stuff!

Money Mark - Stand Up For Your Rice LP

This is a preorder: They are scheduled to be pressed in early July, and should hopefully ship out of the PIAPTK compound around the end of July.

A lost classic Funk Jazz Instrumental LP from Money Mark (Beastie Boys, Beck, Yeah Yeahs Yeahs, David Byrne and just about everybody else in the world). Released only in Japan in 2007 due a story as old as time... A crooked ex-business manager who signed a contract with out Mark's knowledge, then took the money and ran, leaving Mark legally required to release the album exclusively in Japan, but unable to make any money from it.

This is the perfect vibe soundtrack album for your next dinner party / date night.

Lathe Cut Camp 13! October 16-18, 2021

The 12th Camp in September sold out almost immediately, so I am scheduling a second one for October 16-18th!

(This Camp is PERFECT FOR NEWBIES or Folks who just want to learn how it's done whether they want to start cutting themselves or not!)

(Classes are Saturday thru Monday, but Monday is just extra practice and cutting of campers records, so if you need to fly in late Friday and leave late Sunday, you will get most of the information)

YOU ALSO GET TO CUT YOUR OWN RECORDS AND TAKE THEM WITH YOU!

Well, holy crap, the first Lathe Cut Camp in almost 2 years sold out almost immediately, so I'm scheduling this one a month later.

THERE ARE ONLY 8 SPOTS AND ALL PREVIOUS CAMPS HAVE SOLD OUT!

Spend three days in scenic Tucson, AZ learning (almost) everything you need to know about DIY Record Cutting! The focus of this camp will be on mono "semi-professional" machines, with particular focus on Presto 6Ns, which are one of the most common and "industry standard" vintage machines around. (if you have a different model that you want to learn more about, please ask! I may have one you can use here, or you can bring your own). You can do some amazing things with these incredible machines, and I will show you how.

We will also talk about and do a little Stereo Diamond cutting demo, which is new for this lathe cut camp!

Bring your own music and we will put it onto discs for you to take home. We will touch on professional record mastering/pressing, but my main interest and experience, and the focus of this camp, will be on the more DIY and experimental side of the hobby. There are only 8 spots available, so buy early because every previous camp has sold out!

Perfect if you are interested in:
Vinyl records and how their masters are cut
Learning how this strange black art works
Buying a lathe to make your own records
Ordering lathe cuts from a lathe cut service
Cutting your own music to disc

Topics covered:
The science behind vinyl record cutting
Lathe Operations and equipment
The pressing process
Lacquer dub plate cutting
Experimental and alternative materials (plexiglass, laserdiscs, picnic plates, etc)
Stereo Diamond Hifi One-Off Records

Please Note: You are responsible for your own transportation to/from Tucson and your accommodations. However, the hotels here are pretty damn cheap. The New Lathe Cave is in Midtown Tucson near the corner of Glenn and Country Club.

New T-Shirts!

We've got new t-shirts! And we are selling them Cheap AF (basically at cost with freight). We got them on a "clearance sale", which means that we got them cheap... BUT we basically just got the dregs and leftover last batch of discontinued shirts (but these are nice shirts, NOT factory seconds).

What that means is that we didn't get to pick the qty of sizes we wanted. They basically just kind of divided up whatever was left into a few lots that they sold cheap. This means we got a ton of L, XL and XXL in the blue t's (but not many mediums or smalls) and a million smalls in the green t's but literally no other colors in that one. So, I'm gonna sell the ones that I have a bunch of for super cheap so that you can buy them and gift them for that special large or small person in your life (sorry that you'll have to pay a little more to outfit your medium friend, but well, life sometimes just ain't fair.)

New Sugar Candy Mountain LP "Impressions"!

SUGAR CANDY MOUNTAIN - IMPRESSION LP

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A PREORDER! WILL SHIP TO ARRIVE MAY 28th, 2021.

It's finally (almost) here! "Impression", The follow up to Sugar Candy Mountain's excellent "Do Right"!

Available in a few different configurations:
-Classic Black
-Ltd Clear Amber
-Ltd irridescent Green
-Ltd Hand Poured Swirl

If you don't already have them, be sure to add on 666 and Do Right!

"Impression" is a carousel ride through time with the Bonnie & Clyde of psych-pop, where classic meets contemporary. Sugar Candy Mountain gallops seamlessly from tripped out Tropicália, Shuggie Otis inspired grooves, kaleidoscopic psych jams, classic 70's reverie, and nods to krautrock without ever skipping a beat. Along the way Reiter's honeyed voice hovers seductively between breaking and beauty, taking us on a sensational ride through the ups and downs of apocalyptic visions, tender sunlit musings on love, and deep gazes of self reflection. RIYL: Os Mutantes, Tame Impala, Stereolab, The Beatles.

Spaceface and KWKA, Truck Tears, My favorite Podcasts

Well, nothing to quip about this time really, so.....

1. Spaceface / KWKA Op Art 10" pic Disc
2. Truck Tears - Truck Tears - 2/14/21 8" Pic Disc

3. Podcasts I Like

SPACEFACE / KWKA - Experiments in Escapist Infinities 1-4 (Interlude 1.7) / Infinite Loops

Long form Instrumental collaboration between Spaceface and KWKA (Mike Fridmann) also includes 3 unique hidden locked grooves. On a 10"optical art picture disc with 10" round platter mat insert to put under the record while playing it to make the optical effect really pop (best when viewed through your phone). Each pic disc was made using my cricut cutter and was a major pain in the ass. But I do it for you. Also, my daughter Ryer, helped.
There are three variants: Red and Blue are limited to 25 copies each, and the "Chaos Theory Edition" were fuckups that I thought looked cool regardless. They don't do the optical art effect, but they are unique in their own way. "PIAPTK: Shrugging and saying "It's Not A Fuck Up It's a Feature" since 2006".

WHILE YOU ARE AT IT: Pickup some of the other Spaceface releases that are almost sold out.

BLURB FROM SPACEFACE
Working on making a record can be sort of a grueling process when you’re refining the sounds and whittling each song down to fit a mold. It’s important to be able to step away and just have a free flowing fun time makin stuff. Experiments in escapist infinities was exactly that. It mostly made in the winter of 2018, with Jake Ingalls coming up to Fredonia to work on Flaming Lips music between working on Spaceface’s upcoming record and Mike Fridmann (who was assistant engineering the Lips’ records) on off days and inbetween sessions working on the last 2 Flaming Lips releases in Fredonia, NY @ Tarbox Studios.
Each of the two would set up their computers with whatever gear they brought and whatever synths they could get their hands on at Tarbox then record a bunch of material.
The goal was originally to make a collection of loops that could go on playable postcards but eventually Mike sewed together each loop with different soundscapes based on noises and parts we’d played inbetween and created this 8 minute song. We weren’t sure what to do with it until PIAPTK had these wonderful op art lathes they approached us with.
Now these bits have a nice home on a beautiful piece of playable art.
So: I think it worked! We both had a ton of fun making this and now everyone can hear it.
Finally tally of gear ended up being:
An iPad Mellotron app, a fender Rhodes, an OP-1, 1 silver tone guitar, a poly6 and a CS-80. Fun!

Truck Tears - 2/14/21 8" Pic Disc

Truck Tears was a project put together by Paul Cossette (Sturgill Simpsons' Grammy Nominated Engineer who just moved back to Tucson to open a studio) and Joel Crocco (Tucson/Paris wild man from a ton of bands around here and there) with the modest goal of playing and recording a couple of sad bastard old country tunes (one made famous by Ray Price and the other by Hank Williams, Sr) with friends (Including Nate Mahan of Shannon and the Clams) in true Nashville Sound style to be released on 8" pic discs on Valentines Day. #MissionAccomplished. The results are great. Check them out and/or download them for free at: https://trucktears.bandcamp.com

Limited Edition of 60 unique 8" Square pic discs, We all got together with my cricut cutter, some beers, and some spray paint and experimented with color schemes and patterns, making each one it's own work of art.

PODCASTS I LOVE:

I live for the road. Even during the pandemic I managed to drive over 30,000 road miles last year. And I love podcasts. Here are a few of my faves: (PS please send me your faves, too)

THE TOTH ZONE -
Incredible Memoir Audiobook in the form of a podcast from one of the best songwriters/storytellers to ever live, James Jackson Toth (Aka Wooden Wand). Season One is memoir of his growing up as a music obsessive in Staton Island, and Season Two so far has focused on some pretty insane tour stories.
BRADFORD TROJAN AND FRIENDS: Bradford is a Tucson staple (but a Philly transplant like half of the Tucson music scene) and has been in bands/friends/collaborating with tons of PIAPTK folks... Golden Boots, Dr Dog, Andrew Collberg. An insanely entertaining showman, storyteller, actor, puppeteer, etc and his podcast follows suit. So far he has done interviews with musicians, astronomers, musicians, etc like The Teeth, Scott McMicken, Racoon. And coming up in the next month or two will be an interview with Doug O'Donnell (prev of Dr Dog) about the Legacy of Sloppy Joe Flappens (PLEASE check out Keep on Cruisin' if you haven't already) and even yours truly.
Highway Hifi - These guys are great... their podcast covers all kinds of weird and kooky niches of music... Trucker Country, Music of Cults, Tolkien's influence on Music, Women in Electronic Music, and assorted musical legends and lies. Pretty much whatever interests them, and it is incredible how often their interests align with mine.
Wind of Change - If you like Buttrock, Russia, The Cold War, CIA Culture Wars, Spies, Drug Dealers, and international intrigue and Espionage, this is the podcast for you.

Low Profile With Markly Morrison - You may know Markly Morrison from PIAPTK artists like Skrill Meadow, Lazer Zeppelin, and LAKE. He digs deep into the weird, fringe, music world and brings out some incredible stories.

Late Summer Lathe Cut Camp?
I've been getting a TON of requests for a Lathe Cut Camp recently as everybody is getting vaccinated and dying to GTFO of town. So, if you are interested in coming down to Tucson during Monsoon Season, and spending three days learning how to cut records, please email me and let me know. I've also got a few lathes available if you are interested in cutting your own records at home!

Mute Swan (mem of Forest Fallows) - Only Ever LP

I think this might be the only SINGLE RELEASE email I've ever sent out. If that weirds you out, please pretend like there are multiple releases and buy a couple other things that you missed in previous emails. Might I suggest the Golden Boots - Instrumental LP, The Scott McMicken Pic Disc, The Nau+Floating Action Dream Sitch LP, or the Sloppy Joe and The Cruise LP. Or if you wanna dig back to the good old days of PIAPTK, THis Southerly LP is great, as is this Lazer Zeppelin record.

MUTE SWAN (Mem of Forest Fallows) - ONLY EVER LP! LTD Ed first pressing on White Pearl Vinyl

The new record from Tucson's Mute Swan... which is the more rockin' shoegaze psychedelic project from Forest Fallow's Mike Barnett. If you are into that 90s' Dream Pop wall of Melodic Noise vibe ala Swervedriver, Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, etc you will love this record.

(If you don't already have it, PICK UP THE FOREST FALLOWS LP... it's great!!!)

First pressing is limited to 300 copies on white pearl vinyl.

Check it out here: https://muteswanmusic.bandcamp.com/music

Official Blurb:

Mute Swan is the louder, psychedelic parallel-project of PIAPTK alumnus Forest Fallow's Mike Barnett (guitar, vocals). Along with Prabjit Virdee (bass, vocals), Thomas Sloane (guitar) and Gilbert Flores (drums), the Tucson-based four-piece blends neo-psychedelic guitar rock with 90's shoegaze, dream pop and post-punk. They formed in 2014 when two projects dissolved in order to work on something more ambitious, with more attention to production on-stage and in-studio. Since then they've put out an LP, 2 EP's, and a handful of singles and music videos, drawing attention from the Fader and numerous other music publications. In addition to extensive touring across the US, they've opened for The Psychedelic Furs, Modern English, Soft Kill, Wild Nothing, Chris Cohen, No Joy, and many others.

Mute Swan's third offering, Only Ever, takes ingredients from the 90's british underground (fuzzy chorus-laden guitars, airy vocals, hypnotic rhythms) and melds them into a more modern psych-rock style. As it additionally draws from post-punk one moment and krautrock the next, the nine track album manages to weave multiple threads into something cohesive unto itself. While often enveloped in thick vocal effects, the lyrics range in theme from criticisms of the ruling class, to the opioid epidemic, to more personal and philosophical musings. With its experimental approach to production and sonic details, these songs take multiple listens to fully digest and appreciate.

Tracks:
1. Go Out in the Light 2. Burnt Almonds 3. Sedative Sun 4. 4 Over 3 5. Life-Like Dream 6. Only Ever 7. Oblivion 8. DIssolution 9. Enough Fun

Lee Baggett Art Pak + Lost Grunge Album, Briana Marela Color Modulating Lenticular Pic Disc

It's been 8 years since PIAPTK left its' childhood home of Olympia, WA. Now, the 14 year old awkward teenager of a record label is coming home to take a stroll down memory lane for an OLY-ONLY edition, with two of my three favorite Olympia artists... Briana Marela and Lee Gull Baggett!

Also, today is my 42nd bday. I started PIAPTK 14 years ago, so that means that this year, PIAPTK has been with me for 1/3rd of my entire life. Which doesn't sound like that much, but considering I wasn't really doing shit for the first 14 years, I'm going to make it an honorary "Half My Life Project" today on my birthday. If the President can try to extort the Secretary of State of Georgia into fudging the numbers, so can I. But, I digress.

This email is dedicated to the memory of Jonathan Lee Horne, a good bud who passed away last night after a short but vicious battle with stage 4 bone cancer. If you are a customer of JNR, you may very well have interacted with Jonathan over the years. Rest in Power Chords, Jonathan.

This is a short one.

1) Briana Marela - Eclipse Lenticular 7" Lathe Cut Pic Disc
2) Lee Gull Baggett Art Pak / Lost Grunge Album

1) Briana Marela - Eclipse Color Modulating Lenticular Lathe Cut Pic Disc

Our first Lenticular Pic Disc (something I've wanted to do for years, but never gotten around to), with art by Joey Moran that perfectly matches the instrumental sound collage created by Briana Marela. The discs color scheme and pattern modulates as the disc plays (Check the @PIAPTK instagram to see what I mean).

Limited Edition of 60 copies.

Briana is an old friend from Olympia. She has released records on Jagjaguwuar, been commissioned to create a piece for Radiolab, recorded an album with Alec Somers (Sigur Ros) in Iceland, received an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College, etc. She is a fascinating artist and you can learn more about her here: https://brianamarela.com/

PIAPTK released a single for her almost a decade ago called "I Don't Belong To You" which featured frontwards vocals over backwards music on the A-Side and the same song with Backwards Vocals over frontwards music for the B-side (and the B-side was cut from the inside out to play backwards).

About this piece from Briana:

Eclipse is an electro-acoustic piece recorded on a 1/4" Otari tape machine, utilizing performative varispeed, physical tape manipulation, and using 80% tape splices and analog techniques. It began as a piece I composed titled "Ascendant" that was performed by the Eclipse String Quartet (http://www.eclipsequartet.com/) and recorded at Mills College in the concert hall. Sections of the stereo recording of "Ascendant" were then recorded from my computer onto tape, varying the speed of the machine while recording as well as during the transfer back to digital. Creating unique gestures that sound like they live in their own imaginary realm, paying close attention to amplitude contouring, splicing quick changes in contrast to static chordal clusters that hover and breathe. The piece is named after the quartet to pay respect to the talent of the players sampled. Artist Joey Moran (@futureforestsss on IG) of Olympia created a lenticular immersive colorful artwork for the 7" cover that fits the ambient nature of the composition.

2) Lee Gull Baggett Art Pak / Lost Grunge Album

We got a little carried away making this art pak, but to paraphrapse Hunter S. Thompson " “Not that we needed all this for the release, but once you get locked into a seriously over indulgent art pak, the tendency is to push it as far as you can"

LIMITED EDITION OF 50.

I love Lee, who is not only my favorite outsider Americana songwriter, but also one of my favorite visual artists. This Art Pak is also the first time in decades that anyone has heard Fever Tree, Lee's early-90s Grunge Band that he had with his brother, Ted, and is a really fun nostalgic peek at a world that some of us remember first hand, and others of you only know through movies like SIngles or from your parents "war stories"... that of early 90s small town local bands.

You Get:
--1x Custom Fever Tree Business Card Flip-Out Flash Drive (didn't know these existed? Us either, but they are amazing for carrying in your wallet so you always have a flash drive on hand/under ass) Loaded with the Fever Tree - To-And-Fro Pt. 1, 18 track album.
--1x Reproduction Newspaper Clipping of an original (and hilarious) 1991 writeup about Fever Tree in the local San Luis Obsipo, CA weekly
--1x Unique Handdrawn 5x7" Art card featuring a one-of-a-kind pen and water color drawing of one (or more) of Lee's bizarre creatures shredding the gnar.
--1x Lee Gull Burner Rolling Papers packs
--3x Lee Gull / Fever Tree / and Wizard Riding A Walrus 1.5" buttons
--11x 4" weatherproof die cut stickers of various Lee drawings

--All encased inside a Lee Gull psychedelic smell proof bud baggie.
